SSE Airtricity to Raise Prices Starting November 1

In a recent announcement that will surely spark some grumbling among consumers, SSE Airtricity, Northern Ireland's second-largest electricity supplier, will be increasing its standard variable electricity tariff by a modest 4% effective from November 1. This change translates to an average hike of about £45 annually for typical SSE Airtricity customers on this plan.

This news follows closely on the heels of Power NI, another major supplier, who also revealed a similar 4% price increase set to take effect from October 1. Clearly, it seems the energy sector is not quite ready to take a break from price hikes!

Raymond Gormley, the head of energy at the Consumer Council, explained that these increases are primarily due to escalating costs faced by suppliers. He noted, “From November, those SSE customers on a standard variable rate will see their annual electricity cost increase to around £1,227.” While this may not be the most delightful news for consumers, Gormley reminded everyone that factors like rising network and operator-related charges are behind this trend.

To help mitigate the impact of these increases, Gormley advised consumers to reconsider their payment methods. He mentioned that paying via a standard tariff and receiving bills is the priciest way to manage electricity costs. Switching payment plans, altering billing methods, or even changing suppliers could lead to significant savings. In a world where every penny counts, it’s worth considering these options.
