In a move to harness the power of renewable energy, Ofgem has announced that 77 innovative "super battery" projects have reached the final stage of a government support program. These initiatives promise to store green energy and ultimately save consumers some cash.

How Do These Super Batteries Work?

Imagine a giant sponge soaking up excess renewable energy when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. This stored energy is then released back into the grid when demand peaks. By preventing overproduction during peak generation times, consumers won't have to pay energy providers to halt operations on particularly breezy or sunny days.

Leading the charge are lithium-ion battery storage projects, among other creative solutions like compressed air energy storage and pumped hydro schemes. Together, these projects boast a whopping capacity of 28.7 gigawatts – enough to power a small country! Currently, the UK relies on 2.8 gigawatts of long-duration storage, mostly from pumped hydro schemes in Scotland and Wales.

With the government pledging to invest in long-duration energy storage for the first time in 40 years, the future looks bright (or should we say green?).
