The Retreat, a mental health hospital in York, has swung open its doors to the public for the first time in 200 years. Founded by Quaker philanthropist William Tuke in the late 18th century, this Grade II listed building is a pioneer in compassionate mental health care.

New Beginnings

Now, as part of an ambitious redevelopment project led by PJ Livesey, the site is being transformed to include 120 new homes while maintaining its historical essence. Managing Director Georgina Lynch expressed pride in being entrusted with such a significant piece of history, aiming to create a sanctuary that pays homage to the past while catering to modern living.

Community Engagement

As part of the 'York Unlocked' initiative, the developer welcomed 850 visitors to explore the grounds and connect with its historical significance, which sparked a series of additional public events due to overwhelming interest. Those keen on new homes can also register for a VIP preview event on October 23.
