Television architect George Clarke is embarking on an ambitious project to transform the historic 176 High Street West in Sunderland into a vibrant bookshop and café, aptly named Home of Books. This Grade II-listed building aims to serve as a cultural hub, blending the aroma of freshly brewed coffee with the scent of well-loved books.

A Community Living Room

Clarke envisions the ground floor as a "community living room," where locals can gather, read, and sip on their favorite beverages. The upper floors will house a cozy four-bedroom apartment for Clarke and his family, which will also function as boutique accommodation when they are not in town. Talk about a home away from home!

Bringing Stories to Life

The bookshop will specialize in titles that encapsulate Sunderland's spirit, touching on architecture, art, music, and more. Alongside the bookshop, a small café and wine bar will offer a delightful menu of coffee and light snacks during the day, transforming into a wine and cold plates venue by night. Events, readings, and casual discussions will also play a pivotal role in making this space a cultural hotspot.

With a focus on conservation, Clarke is committed to respecting the building’s heritage while giving it a fresh purpose in the city’s evolving narrative. If all goes according to plan, Home of Books is set to open its doors in 2026, coinciding with the National Year of Reading.
